First Visit

Olivia and I met with 4 students from Hillside today. They were great. We spent most of our time talking to 2 of the students. They seem to know exactly what they want. Mostly, comfy seating. They want a place to relax and zone out on the computers after they finish their homework. Digging a little deeper, they told us that they would like to see images on the wall of people who inspire them. They were pretty excited about the space and what they could learn on new software programs.

  1. Things we learned in the interview were that the students were looking for some comfortable seating, soft flooring, like a carpet. It was important to the students that the space would not get to crowded, a way to separate themselves from other students enjoying the space could be to use headphones while working on the computer, but not apple ear bud ones more like the larger ones that go outside of your ears. One thing they thought would be cool is to have a wall that they could graffiti on we could use something like chalk board paint that way they could draw on the wall and in the future other students can erase what they have done and give the wall their own decoration. Like Esther said the students seemed very interested in having inspirational people on the walls, and possibly inspirational quotes. They want to work as individually as possible they did not seem to enjoy working in the other computer lab where they all had to work together, given that was because they had a lack of computers. Something that we talked about last class that I still think has importance is using a projector to show the computer screen of the teacher because I think it makes learning on the computer for many students easier.
